Vivo X90 Pro debuts globally: A worthy challenger to the Galaxy S23 Ultra

Chinese Camera-focused smartphone manufacturer brand Vivo has officially launched its latest Vivo X90 series smartphones globally. For the global market, Vivo introduced the base and pro variants- but the Pro+ variant hasn’t been announced. We still don’t know whether Vivo is going to announce the X90 Pro Plus variant globally or not. The Vivo X90 series is comprised of Vivo X90 and X90 Pro. The smartphone already made its debut in China back in November 2022. According to leaks, the Vivo X90 series is likely to launch in India in March 2023.

Successor to the Vivo X80 series launched earlier this year comes with more improved specifications. Vivo’s X series smartphones totally focused on camera performance. The smartphone’s camera is way more efficient in delivering professional-level results, all thanks to its flagship camera specifications.

Vivo X90 flaunts a 6.78-inch curved FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. The smartphone houses a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP OIS-enabled main camera joined by a 12MP ultra-wide angle camera and a 12MP portrait camera. There is a 32MP punch-hole cutout selfie snapper.

The smartphone boots on Android 13 based on Funtouch OS 13 custom skin out of the box. It has a 4,810mAH battery with 120W fast charging support. Vivo X90 is priced at MYR 3,699 (roughly ₹70,000).

Talking about the camera details, the Vivo X90 Pro+ features a high-quality glass element with Abbe number 81.6 (a higher number means less light dispersion). Vivo X90 Pro+ smartphone features a Quad rear camera setup. The Quad camera setup is comprised a 50MP Sony IMX989 1-inch Primary camera joined by a 48MP Ultra-low distortion ultrawide camera, 50MP portrait lens with 2x optical zoom, and 64MP telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom.

The main camera has 77% more photosensitive area compared with the predecessor. The camera has OIS support. Vivo packs a bunch of camera features in the X90 Pro+ smartphone such as one can record 8k video at 30FPS, different modes- dynamic photo, micro movie, dual view video, and much more. Want to shoot ultra-high-resolution video no worries, the device offers 14bit RAW video mode.

The lens is coated with a ZEISS T formulation that reduces ghosting and glare. Vivo calls the X90 Pro+ smartphone is the king of camera phones. Probably because of the 1″ inch sensor although it’s not the first smartphone to come with Sony’s IMX989 sensor. Vivo worked with Sony to add more enhancements to the sensor. The sensor has big a f/1.75 aperture which lets in more light. There is a 32MP selfie camera for capturing stunning selfies and video chats.

To make image processing faster, Vivo X90 Pro+ is equipped with its new Vivo V2 image processing unit. The new V2 Image processing chipset is equipped with 45MB of large SRAM and it handles AI NR noise reduction, MEMC, and HDR.

Vivo shared some sample shots taken from the Vivo X90 Pr0+ smartphone and to be honest, those shots are outstanding. It feels like the shots were taken from a DSLR camera. Recently, 200MP camera smartphones such as Xiaomi 12T Pro, Moto Edge 30 Ultra, and Infinix Zero Ultra were launched in the market.

And there is no doubt the X90 Pro+ smartphone’s camera captures a much better picture compared to 200MP smartphones. Vivo shared some images with special modes codeveloped with Zeiss- Zeiss Minature Bokeh, Landscape and Architecture. The three images below show what the smartphone’s camera is capable of.

Under the hood, Vivo X90 Pro+ is the first smartphone to come with Snapdragon’s latest in-house SoC. Recently, Qualcomm unveiled its latest and most powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. And Vivo X90 Pro+ is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor forged on 4nm architecture paired with Adreno 730 GPU, 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and up to 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The smartphone runs on Android 13 based on Origin OS 3.0 out of the box.

The Vivo X90 Pro+ sports a 6.78-inch 2K double curved LTPO 4 Samsung E6 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 1,800 nits of peak brightness, 10-bit colors, and 1200Hz instant touch sampling rate. It has Dolby Vision and HDR technology support. The smartphone has an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor.

In terms of battery, Vivo X90 Pro+ houses a 4,700mAh battery with 80W fast charging support. The smartphone charges 0 to 100 percent in just 33 minutes. The device also supports 50W wireless charging as well. Vivo offers standard connectivity options in the smartphone including 5G, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth v5.3 with aptX HD and LDAC support, NFC, GPS, a headphone jack (Type C), and USB Type C (is rated for USB 3.2 Gen 1) for charging and data transfer.

The device is IP68 rated for water and dust resistance. The smartphone weighs 221 grams and measures 9.7mm thick. To keep the smartphone cool under heavy performance, it has a large 8,900mm² cooling vapor chamber. The Vivo X90 Pro+ smartphone comes in two color options with a faux leather texture- Original Black and China Black.

Vivo X90 Pro+ smartphone comes in two variant options- the 12GB RAM and 256GB variant costs ¥6,499 /₹74,280/ $910 while the top 12GB RAM and 512GB variant priced at ¥6,999/₹79,844/$976. The pre-sale for the smartphone will start on November 28 and shipping will start from 6th December.
